Collection Waller - L'art en mouvement (part 1)
Sotheby's
On October 25, Sotheby’s sells The Waller collection in Paris. It brings together the various French and European post-war avant-garde movements. It expresses a strong focus on texture and relief. Works by the painters of the Paris new school, including Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages and Olivier Debré, pioneers of lyrical abstraction such as Georges Mathieu and Jean Degottex, and even the great figures of informal art with masterpieces by Antoni Tàpies, Jean Dubuffet or Manolo Millares will be presented. This collection is that of an amateur sensitive to the art of his time, and curious about new movements. The collection also includes some historical works by artists such as César, Arman or Jean Tinguely, proud representatives of New Realism, as well as others of exceptional quality by the artists Jean Messagier and René Duvillier of the Nuagisme movement.
The most anticipated work of this sale was by Andy Warhol. It is from the "American Indian" series, dated 1977. The artist depicted Russell Means -a prominent member of the American Indian Movement, through which Means became a symbol of a contemporary crisis with deep cultural connotations. This highly symbolic portrait in shimmering colors sums up the eclecticism and exceptional quality of the Waller collection.
