The Final Christo original works for the Arc de Triomphe
Sotheby's
In September, Sotheby’s Paris will introduce The Final Christo, an exhibition which lists 25 works by the artist, including L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped. Each work will be available for private sales and profits will be donated to Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped project, and Fondation Christo et Jeanne-Claude, created in order to protect the artists’ legacy for future generations.
Christo and Jeanne-Claude used to say: “Our work of art is a scream of freedom”. Against sponsorship, grants, unpaid work and all forms of merchandising and monetization, Christo said that “to keep an absolute freedom, we cannot be obliged to anyone”. His unusual works guarantee this artistic independence and keep it till the end.
He was a master in pastels and sketches, but he also included elements of sticking such as fabric samples used to wrap the Arc de Triomphe. It’s this multimedia approach, placing left brain and right brain in perfect suspension, that conveys his unique genius.
