Modernities - Impressionist & Modern Art
On the occasion of the capital’s International Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC),
Sotheby's presented its third edition entitled Modernities. Considered to be
one of the Parisian auction house’s most iconic sales, the exhibition was held
from October 16 th 2019 and achieved record sales.
Etienne Hellman, Modernities Sales Manager at Sotheby's France says “With a
selection of modern, post-war and contemporary art, the third Modernités sale
is perfectly in tune with the times. During the FIAC, international buyers were
numerous and we witnessed some intense bidding wars for remarkable
twentieth century works.
Bidding wars, for example, for Le Cirque mauve, a remarkable and emblematic
work of art by Marc Chagall dating from 1966 and sold for 3,648,100€. Artist
Francis Picabia also had the auction room buzzing for Médéa, an ink, pencil,
watercolour and gouache on cardboard dated 1929. This remarkable and
captivating work achieved 2,652,500€.
Over several days, the Modernities Impressionist; Modern Art exhibition
attracted countless visitors who flocked to admire works by renowned artists
such as Jean Dubuffet, René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Pierre Soulages, César and
Salvador Dali.
